Garden Recycling Tips

Having a yard or garden allows you to do things for the environment that you might not be aware of. We all want to protect the Earth as much as we possibly can, and even small tasks can be beneficial. Here are some tips to help you go green with ease.

Grass Clippings: Did you know that by leaving your grass clippings on the ground instead of removing them you can add a natural fertilizer to your lawn? It's true. Grass clippings that are left on the ground will decompose and as they do they will produce nitrogen which is great for the soil.

Lawn Mower Replacement: When your old gas mower gives up the ghost and is finally retired, consider replacing it with a cleaner electric mower. Many homeowners do not realize that gas powered mowers often give up more dangerous emissions than the average car. They are also more difficult to keep maintained. Electric mowers are much more environmentally friendly and with advances in technology they are very reliable and easier to use. In most cases they are also lighter, meaning they put less stress on your body as you use them.

Compose Pile: Many homeowners have the ability to start a compose pile. Compost is arguably the best garden food that you can apply to your plants, vegetable, and flowers. When properly prepared, compose not only acts as a great fertilizer but it also retains water and moisture where it is applied. It increases the level of drainage which can help prevent disease in your garden and it also encourages the growth of orgasms and bacteria that are beneficial to both gardens and yards.

Reuse Materials: If you happen to be doing a renovation job around the house and end up with a pile of broken concrete or cement, why not use that to make a retaining wall in your garden? If you find you have a stack of old bricks, use them as weed squashers in the garden or if you have enough make a small walkway with them. Reusing materials is one way to greatly decrease the amount of "stuff" that is going into landfills. It is also a fantastic way to save money!

Plastic Tips: If you find that have several old plastic pots in the garden shed, rather than throw them into the trash, send them off to the recycling plant. Plastics are one of the most versatile products around and can be used over and over again. If you like, you wash out your old pots and keep them for later use. The key is to keep them out of the landfill where they will only sit and take up space.

Using Paper: We have more paper coming to us than we need. You can use paper to layer your mulch which will help to keep weeds from sprouting up. Paper, when it decomposes, makes a great addition to your fertilizer base.

Here is a great idea for keeping slugs out of the garden. Crush and scatter your egg shells around the garden. Slugs will not slide over egg shells.
